Description
What makes them special?
Smart, technical insulation garments have always been a hallmark of Houdini - we call it point-marking garments. Women's Down Fri Shorts are designed with a dual purpose. The construction with full-length side zips and a durable outer material make them perfect to wear over your trousers for added warmth during activities of varying intensity, such as mountain climbing or rock climbing. But thanks to the soft, smooth materials and the highly compressible lining, they also work great to wear under shell pants – perfect for really cold days on the ski slopes.
How do they work?
Women's Downfri Shorts are lined with Primaloft® Gold. When it comes to insulation, the following applies: The thinner the fibers, the softer and more compressible the material becomes. The lining in the Downfri series consists of ultra-fine synthetic fibers that are naturally water-repellent. The airy structure formed by the fibers traps body heat in a soft and resistant layer of warm air that keeps moisture out but allows moisture to ventilate. The Switch Woven outer material is an extremely durable yet lightweight fabric that can withstand years of hard use, and the inner lining is an ultra-light, smooth fabric called Spinner Ripstop. Together, these materials create a durable, versatile and highly packable garment that is perfect for layering and easily fits in a backpack.
When should I use them?
Women's Down-Free Shorts are ideal for activities in cold weather where you need extra warmth during breaks - for example on summit tours or rock climbing/fuse. Thanks to full-length zippers on the sides, you can take them on and off without taking off your skis. You can also wear them as a powerful insulating layer under shell pants for moderate activity in really cold climates. They are also perfect for camping – or even sleeping in during winter trips.
This garment is made with the future in mind, from materials suitable for recycling. When it is finally worn out, please return it to Houdini so that the raw material can be used again. In this way, we reduce the need for virgin resources, minimize environmental impact and limit waste streams.

Care advice
Lined synthetic garments
Our lined garments consist of an outer fabric and an inner fabric, with insulating synthetic lining from Primaloft in between. There are many advantages to using Primaloft's synthetic lining, including not having to tumble dry the garment with balls to puff it up after washing. It dries faster than down and does not smell when wet.
- Air clothes instead of washing if the clothes are not too dirty. You save water, energy and make clothes last longer.
- Use a laundry bag. It is important when you wash synthetic clothes as it protects your garments and prevents microfibers from leaking out. When cleaning the bag and filter in the machine, make sure to wipe clean and dispose of lint in the bin. Never rinse the laundry bag with water as the fibers can then end up in lakes and oceans.
- Wash at a maximum of 40 degrees.
- Wash with mild environmentally certified detergents and be sure to use the correct dosage.
- Avoid fabric softener. In addition to being bad for the environment, it impairs the garment's performance, especially moisture transport and drying time.
- Hang dry, but add heat to the garment after washing so that the water-repellent surface of the outer fabric is reactivated. Use a heating cabinet, tumble dryer or iron, just make sure to keep an eye on the heat so the garment doesn't melt.
sustainability
Bluesign®
BluesignThe ® mark means that the production has been inspected by an independent party to exclude harmful chemicals and substances from the very beginning of the manufacturing process. This benefits both people, animals and our entire planet.
circular
The marking circular means that the product is made from either recycled and recyclable or renewable and biodegradable fibres. Most products in today's society are produced according to a linear life cycle where the earth's resources are extracted, used and then thrown away. This is unsustainable in the long run and causes a major environmental impact. Instead, we want to close the circle and reuse the material we already have. But we need your help. When your Houdini garments are completely worn out, please return them to our recycling stations in our stores or at many retailers.
recycled
The marking recycled means that the garment contains at least 50% recycled fibers (often more - see product description). The source is either recycled clothing or materials such as PET bottles. We mainly use recycled polyester, which has many advantages. It reduces both carbon dioxide emissions and water consumption compared to new polyester. How much it reduces depends on the type of recycling. One of our suppliers shows 32% less CO₂ emissions and 94% less water use for mechanical recycled polyester. In addition to the production advantage, this means a big step: using "waste" as a raw material instead of fossil oil.
Recyclable
The label Recyclable means that the raw material in the product can be reused for new products, instead of becoming waste. Our goal is that by 2030 at the latest, we shall not use any raw materials from the earth's crust in our products. Circular products made from recycled and recyclable materials are truly groundbreaking – but we need your help to make the system work. When your Houdini garments are completely worn out, please return them to us. We have recycling stations in all our own stores and at many retailers.
