Clothing for easy and technical hiking

Regardless of whether you are aiming for an efficient day trip or a longer hike with overnight stays, the right clothing plays a crucial role in both your safety, comfort and experience. Here we guide you through how to build a highly functional lightweight equipment for technical hiking in an alpine environment

The basis: The layer on layer principle

In alpine environments, the weather changes rapidly. Therefore, you should dress in several layers that you can easily take off or put on depending on the activity and the changes in nature.

1. base layer – Regulate humidity and heat

The foundation of all layer-on-layer systems is the undercarriage. One base layer in pure, unmixed merino wool gives the very best performance and regulates the heat according to the body temperature and the surroundings. It also stays fresh longer.

Tips: Avoid cotton close to the body. It binds moisture and cools you down.

2. midlayer – Insulate heat

Yours midlayer whose main task is to insulate body heat and keep you warm in all weathers. For fast and technical hiking we would recommend one midlayer in synthetics that provide good insulation, high breathability and performance to low weight.

Tips: If you will be in high alpine environments where it gets cold in the evenings, you should add a lined vest or insulation jacket.

3. Outerwear for most weathers

When you are active for longer periods, the most important thing is to dress in well-balanced outerwear that provides weather protection but does not trap moisture and residual heat. A light, strong, stretchy softshell breathable is the very best, as long as it doesn't rain heavily.

Tips: Softshell-garments for hiking are often excellent for top tours in winter as well.

4. Waterproof outer layers

The development of waterproof shell layers has progressed extremely rapidly in recent years. Above all, they have become extremely light and packable, which means that you can carry both lighter softshell- garments for most weather and waterproof shell layers for when it really rains or snows.

Tips: Choose a size that you can comfortably fit with thermal clothing underneath.
